Computing the costs of road maintenanceROCC The system of road maintenance – from reporting to repairing – in Croydon has been streamlined and improved with an upgrade of key computer software.

The Uniclass Repairs and Maintenance (URM) system – a complete suite of modules for highways maintenance and repair jobs, from initiation to completion – has been upgraded at Croydon Council.

URM enables the council to increase efficiencies and improve service delivery against key performance indicators due to the seamless management of repair and maintenance jobs.

The upgraded technology links a number of council departments – recording such incidents as road traffic accidents and call-outs that incur costs – enabling the relevant department to be charged for the work carried out.

That might involve cleaning up after an incident, or making repairs to damaged road surfaces or street furniture.

The system also calculates the charges to be made to drivers responsible for any damage caused.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said: “We’re always keen to take advantage of the best that modern systems can offer if they mean an increase in efficiency in the way the council goes about its business.”

“As would be expected, there has been a cost involved in upgrading the software, but that cost will be more than met by the resultant savings.”

“The maintenance of the borough’s roads is a costly and labour-intensive exercise, and the URM system gives us a way of ensuring the work is done in as efficient a manner as possible, while keeping on top of the costs and offering the best value for money.”
