ROCC leading the way with Server and
Desktop VirtualisationROCC has growing expertise and
experience in the deployment of the leading technology of both
server and desktop Virtualisation. The ability to both save
significant sums of money and make ‘green’ efficiencies is a
compelling proposition for many of ROCC’s private and public sector
clients.
So what are the benefits of virtualisation?
Desktop Virtualisation
Conventionally, IT systems have been ‘rolled-out’ to users by
providing PCs. There is a better way of doing this using specialised
hardware known as ‘Thin Clients’. Essentially these are simple
devices which provide the user with a similar experience to using a
PC but where all the significant processing is done on a central
server.
Advantages of Thin Clients compared to PCs are:
1. They are tiny compared to a PC, taking up little space on the
desktop.
2. They are more energy efficient.
3. They have no moving parts to go wrong (no hard disk, CD-ROM drive
or fan)
4. They are cheaper to buy
5. They can be written off over 5 years rather than 3
Server Virtualisation
In most infrastructures, servers are loaded with single purpose
applications, such as Exchange, SQL, etc. You therefore have one
machine running your file and print, one running email, one running
your databases and so on. The downside of this is that you start
collecting servers that each spend a good proportion of their time
idle. Your server room will fill up with servers, your
air-conditioning will need to be able to cope with the amount of
heat generated by running all these machines, and therefore your
electricity bill will start to rocket. Virtualisation software can
create copies of multiple servers (‘virtual servers’) and run them
on a single physical machine.

The way ahead…
ROCC have already installed a number of virtual servers and desktops
as interest in virtualisation continues to grow. Our expertise in
virtualisation has already helped companies realise a payback period
of between just 6-10 months.
Virtualisation improves ROI by :-
1. Lowering hardware maintenance costs
2. Lowering energy costs
3. Making better use of disk space
4. Lessening downtime
Since much less hardware is needed, this cutting-edge technology
also helps curb e-waste. Furthermore, less hardware also means that
less heat is being released, which indirectly leads to less air
conditioning usage to maintain room temperature and avoid over
heating.
